For our “Metal Library 1” we wanted to create not only plain and clean metals but also some very nice used and corroded metal materials that are very easy to use. Variation is the key for realistic used materials. Dirt and corrosion appears different on the  different parts of the object. For instance edges are interacting more often with other objects –  so corrosion or dirt is “rubbed” off and the metal appears.
When it comes to edge detection in vray there are mainly 2 possibilities: Vray Dirt and the Vray Curvature Shader. Both have their pros and cons. After some testing we decided to use the Vray Curvature Shader. The main reason was to avoid blurry transitions. With the Curvature Shader we were able to create hard transitions between the 2 different materials, metal and dirt/corrosion. Another target was to make it usable even for beginners because after a while the shaders became more and more complex. After we figured out the settings for the Curvature Shader, we started to combine it with a couple of other shaders. So we added a very easy to follow step by step manual.
